Two Favorite Reno Casinos

There are several big name casinos in Reno and then there are some that what most gamblers would call a local casino. The two favorites of this author are the Silver Club in the little railroad town just west or Reno and the Cal Neva which is located in the heart of downtown Reno and surrounded by some of the big boys.

In both cases the reason I have a fondness for these two is they have been good to me over the years and they are well run and in the case of Cal Neva, one of the most profitable casinos in Reno according to those who supposedly know. Both have terrific sports books and places to eat. Neither is noted for a show or their high roller gaming tables, but they do offer table games that have very reasonable limits and the visitors and the locals seem to like both casinos. The Cal Neva has always enjoyed a large amount of play in their sports book and you will see long lines on Sunday morning during the Pro football season. The Cal Neva poker room is one of the better ones in Reno and is run on a no nonsense basis. When I lived there, I played a lot of horses and poker, so the sports books were very important to me as well as good food at dinnertime. The Cal Neva has an annual thoroughbred racing betting tournament, which grabs players from all around the country. One year I came very close to winning the tournament.

The Silver Club has a sports book that is run like a quiet library and is great for serious horse handicappers. They have individual tables with hooded lights and then a somewhat dimly lighted room to sit in and study the form. For those players who use computers they have plug ins at each table. You can play any sports bet at either club and also play any table game at either casino.

The other clubs in Reno have the glitzy shows and the high roller tables or baccarat rooms. A player who is visiting the biggest little city in Nevada can do both, but they would be well advised to at least have lunch at the Silver Club and enjoy the famous prime rib dinner at the Cal Neva. If you are a sports book patron either place will meet the mark.

The Cal Neva does have a hotel, which has been added since I lived there. The Silver Club has its own rather large hotel associated with the casino. Both of these casinos have been part of the Reno scene for years and their customers are very loyal as the clubs really go out of their way to treat players well.

A true story about the Cal Neva is worth repeating. I was playing the horses in their sports book one day and an elderly gentlemen joined me at my table where I was busy handicapping the races. When I took a break, we started talking and I asked him how he was doing and where was he from. He told me was from a state in the Midwest and he had never been to Reno before. He and his wife were there to celebrate their 50th anniversary with his three children and their spouses. I thought about it as he told me this trip was on his kids and they really wanted their Mom and Dad to have a good time. I told him excuse me and I went to find the sports book manager who was a friend of mine. I did not abuse the comps very often and he knew it. I told him the story the older gentleman had told me and I asked him to do me a favor and do something to help them have a great memory of Reno. He was a really good guy and he came with me and I introduced him to my table friend. He talked with him a minute and asked the man what he was going to do while they were in Reno. The end of the story is he comped the entire party, four couples for dinner. I will always remember the look on the gentleman’s face when he finally understood that dinner was on the Cal Neva. As you can tell, I have a warm spot in my heart for this casino.
