Tournament Poker versus Cash Games

Tournament poker takes a different mind set than Ring or Cash Games take. Most tournaments have a one-time buy-in and if a player loses all of buy-in they are out of the tournament. In a cash game, the player can buy more chips anytime during the game. As long as they have more money, they can continue in the game.

Because of a mistake, a player can be eliminated from the tournament by misplaying a hand or getting the wrong read on an opposing player. For this reason the all-in bet is one that has to be respected as the wrong call in this situation can mean the end of the tournament. In a cash game, the pressure is off and a bad play or call can be overcome by buying more chips. All poker takes a little luck, but skillful players do much better than players who depend on luck to get by on. Any player can get on a rush and win by just calling before the Flop and winning due to the Flop falling in their favor. Rushes like this are seen in cash games more often than they show up in online poker games. Winning hands can be seen for hours in a live cash game. Online rushes seem to be limited to four or five winning hands in a short time period.

A person that is a good cash game player can become a very good tournament player as they are well grounded in how to play well. The element that they have to learn is they cannot rebuy in most tournaments. This makes for a major change in their thinking and the risks they are willing to take on any given hand.

Another factor in tournament play is the higher the buy-in, the better level of players that will be in the tournament. This is true in cash games as well and so this area is similar. A newer player would be advised to take the steps to higher stakes or higher tournament play in increments. Win at the level you are playing before moving up to a higher level.

One way to move to higher-level tournaments is to win your way into the tournament by winning a satellite tournament that gives a seat in the bigger tournament. This accomplishes two things at once. The winning player has been skillful enough to win the satellite and the out of pocket cost is minimal compared to the regular tournament buy-in. Many of the recent WSOP winners got to play in the tournament by winning a much lower cost satellite and did not have to fork over the $10,000 buy-in to play in Las Vegas.

One other item that should be mentioned, those players that have most of their experience in online tournaments would be very wise to play in some live tournaments before tackling some of the bigger live tournaments. There is a big difference between live and online. Interaction among players can be very distracting in live tournaments. Online a player can turn off the chat and play in a virtual cocoon.
