Story of a high roller 3

This is a true story of a poker-playing buddy of mine that I knew when I lived in Las Vegas. He was a known high roller who pushed the high roller casino limits. I will call him Rick for purposes of this story. We were playing a small buy-in no limit Holdem game and he started telling of what had happened to him over the weekend.

"I bet on the fight the other night."

So what I thought as Rick was a high roller on sporting events and I knew he won far more than he lost betting on sports

He continued his story and as it unfolded, I was surprised at his demeanor. He told the tale with little obvious emotion.

"I bet 200 large on the fight and got 3 to 1 on my money."

Since I did not bet fights, I had to ask why he got such great odds on his bet. He replied, "I bet the fight would go 15 rounds and the sportsbook thought it would not go over 8 rounds. That is why I got the 3 to 1 action on the bet. All went well during the early rounds and then the fighters started really beating up on each other. I got a little worried, but these guys were not going to quit no matter what, so the later rounds went by slowly and with each round, I was that closer to winning. The 13th and the 14th rounds were brutal and I was very worried as each fighter took turns beating up on other and it looked for sure that one of them would go down. But neither did and the 14th round ended and I knew I just needed to get by one more round to win a decent bet I even relaxed a little when the 15th round started and they both were dancing around and not continuing the bloody assault on each other. When it got to the halfway point in the round, I tried not to think I am going to win, but it sure looked good from what I saw in the ring.

Then these two pugs started really going after each other again. Neither was giving an inch. It was seconds of one fighter beating on the other and then the other fighter coming back and viciously beating on his opponent. They both looked like they had already lost the fight as they were bleeding all over the ring.

The announcer answered my unspoken question of how much time is left in the fight? We have over a minute to go in this brawl and there is not an obvious winner to me. I am dieing a slow death as I am just seconds away from a really good score. With thirty seconds to go I thought I might be home free even though the fighters kept taking turns brutalizing each other. Then with out any warning, the fighter that was the favorite got in a strong right cross that hurt the other fighter. He followed up with more relentless jabs and the fighter he was hurting started to buckle. There were 15 seconds on the clock when he went down cold. He did not get up and I lost my bet with 15 seconds to go. I think that qualifies as a bad beat."

"It sure does", I said shaking my head.
