There have been times in my gambling career when I was considered a high roller and was listed in the computers as such in high roller casinos. My status as a high roller was earned by playing baccarat one night for $3000 a hand.
I did not have that kind of money, but I got very lucky and had the best rush going that I have ever experienced gambling. This win ended with me very full of Jack Daniels and a pocket full of dollars. The total exceeded $28.000 before I quit, as the cards were getting hard to see. The story I want to tell however is about a bet I made on a Wednesday afternoon at the local OTB on a horse race.
The bet could have been made in any high roller casino, but the OTB was closer. The story is important as the result helped me save a bankrupt company. I took over a bankrupt company because the fellow who owned it owed me money and could not pay me. It was touch and go for several months and this bet on that Wednesday was made in desperation to meet bills and payroll that were not going to be covered when they came due. I had a grand total of $800 in my money clip. It would not come close to helping me cover what was due.
I told my secretary that I would be back shortly and I left, driving directly to the OTB. There was a horse running that I had my eye on and I felt he was in the right race to win. I got to the OTB and went to the VIP lounge to bet on the race and sit at the bar and watch it run. I had made up my mind that I was going for broke on this race and the entire $800 would be put at risk. When the early odds were flashed, my pick to win was quoted at over 25 to one. I had picked the horses that I thought would finish in the money and they became part of my betting strategy. I bet $400 on the horse to win and the rest on one-way exactas with him in the win hole and the other two horses I liked in second place. When they broke out of the gate, the odds on my pick for first showed at 19 to one
At the finish line it was a blanket finish with my horse and the two others that I had played in the exactas. The photo sign was immediately displayed. I told the bartender to give me a shot of Daniels. I needed my horse in the win hole or all was lost. When the photo sign came down my horse had won. Before I could celebrate the inquiry sign went up. All three horses were involved. I had four more shots while they decided the inquiry. It probably was only ten minutes, but it sure seemed longer than that. When they finally made it official the race stood unchanged with my horse in first and the longer priced of the two other finishers in second. Needless to say I had made a killing on the race.
When I walked back into my office, my secretary looked at me in a funny way.
"Have you been drinking?"
"A little", I said. I then told her all was well and we counted the hundred dollar bills to see for sure that it had really happened.
