Omaha Hi Low Ideas

Omaha Hi Low Poker is a seven card per hand poker game that looks like Holdem except there can be two sets of winners in a hand. Half the pot is awarded to the low hand if it meets the requirement of having five cards that are eight of lower and none of the five are paired. The rules are the player must use any two cards from their hands and three from the flop to make a high or low hand. The best high hand is the same ranking as you see in any high hand poker game. The best five card low hand is Ace through Five and suited does not hurt the hand.

This poker game has the ability to build very large pots as the players in the hand are betting that they will win the high hand or the low hand or both. If the low is not locked in before the Turn card or the River card, the low hand can miss and all the players that have been betting on winning the low hand can be left high and dry. This means that only the high hand will collect all of the pot if there is no qualifying low hand. This can make for winning some very large pots because there is no low. The other possibility is that one player can win both hands with say a low of five high and an Ace high flush. These are very common hands in Omaha and can often be seen in one hand.

Suggestions
Here are some suggestions for playing the game of Omaha. Do not raise the opening bet because you have an Ace and a Deuce in your starting hand. The low can still miss and one or more players often tie the low hand. Only raise when you have a possible lock on the high hand; or you have the possible scooper hand and could win both sides of the pot. Only play a hand if it contains an Ace unless you are on a rush. Double pair hands seldom work out for the player and three of kind hands should just be folded before the Flop. When the River card has been dealt, watch out if there is a pair on the Board. Very likely there will be a full-house high hand. Three suited cards in the flop will very likely result in a flush. Three of a kind is not a very strong hand unless there is no flush of full-house possibility. Two pair is a very weak hand and rarely wins except when all the other players were playing for the low hand. The pot limit game in Omaha Hi Low is an excellent game when played for the lower end of the blind structure. The cost to see the Flop is very reasonable and the hand can be folded if it misses. Straights and flushes are very common in Omaha Hi Low due to each player holding four cards and being able to use the five-card Flop. Each player has nine cards in which to make a hand so the higher hands show up more often. Big wins are seen a lot in Omaha Hi Low.
