Most players seem to learn to play Holdem at a limit table. Once the player can consistently win at a limit table, it may be time to move to a Pot Limit or No Limit game. Each move up will be accompanied by a learning curve, as there is a vast difference between playing limit Holdem and Pot Limit or No Limit. Also Pot Limit and No Limit should not be tried with scared money. If you cannot afford the loss do not play, as the betting will get in the way of playing your hands in the correct manner. Higher limit games are a good testing ground to see if you should consider the next step in playing. Low blind pot limit games are another way to move up to higher stakes games as you can see the Flop very often by calling rather small bets.
Limit games can be challenging due to the fact that many calling station players will call to the River to make sure you are not bluffing. These players are not players to run a bluff on and will not go away easily until they get tired of losing.
Solid players are easier to bluff as they will respect a raise and assume you have a hand to make the bet. But on the other hand, when a solid player raises, you must assume they have a hand and are not bluffing. Call solid players only when you feel you have the edge or the pot is worth the risk of being wrong. Do not run and hide when a player raises before the Flop. The Flop could easily make your hand a monster and win you a sizeable pot. The higher stakes games and No Limit games will usually have a group of better players than a small limit game. Better players want to play in games where their skill level is rewarded to the maximum possible. There are always crazy rich people who play in games they should not be in, but they do it because they can afford to risk. When money is not a factor, players can play with no fear and gamble on hands that other players would fold.
Drunks are another group of players to be careful with. If they get lucky, they can put a big hurt on any player. You see this all the time in casino poker rooms.
The trash talking that goes on all the time in online games would never be tolerated in well run live poker rooms. Online poker rooms are not well supervised and ignorant players get away with many classless acts and statements. The best thing to do if you are seated at such a table is to turn off the offending players chat. Bad beats happen in all poker games and online they are amazing. Get use to the fact that you will be knocked out of tournaments by really unbelievable draws against very good hands.
