Ladbrokes see sharp drop in retail betting

Popular betting shop company Ladbrokes has seen a big drop in its retail betting sector.  Ladbrokes saw a bad start to the year in retail betting as bad weather kept players at home.  Ladbrokes has also lagged behind its rival William Hill recently.  The CEO of ladbrokes commented “There’s no doubt that it is an extremely competitive environment and I think that in both the offline and online arena we can see a clear case for Ladbrokes needing to regain its primacy.”  Ladbrokes have 2,750 betting shops and revenue has fallen 6% with an 11% drop in retail.  Overall Ladbrokes are reporting much higher profits overall due to the their move to Gibraltar earlier on in the year which William Hill have also move to due to the much better tax opportunities.

William Hill sponsors the Monster raving looney party

On the run up to the general election in the UK, William Hill have sponsored the famous Monster raving looney party, which will mean they change their name on the ballot paper to say Monster Raving Looney William Hill Party.  The Monster raving looney party was formed in 1982 by the late Lord Sutch.

“We believe that parties like the Loony Party are an essential part of British democracy and eccentricity and that the world would be a poorer place if there was no room in politics for a little harmless levity,” said Graham Sharpe, Media Relations Director of William Hill.

In the past William Hill sponsored Lord Such on many occasions before his death in 1999 as he ran for parliament.

Cal Neva Lodge casino closes down

The famous Cal Neva Lodge casino, a hangout of the Rat Pack during the 60’s along side many other world famous celebrities is now closing down.  In the last few years the casino has suffered reduced profits and the recession has made it clear to the owners that the correct decision is to close its doors.  The new owners believe it will be open soon again under new management but experts don’t believe this to be the case.  With online casino popularity booming and more new casinos popping up, older casinos like the Cal Neva have had to struggle to exist and now they think it is the time to stop struggling.

Victoryland casino reopens in Alabama

Victoryland casino in Alabama has reopened after a judge ruled that Bob Riley and his so called “anti gambling task force” do not have the jurisdiction to keep this casino closed.  Governor Riley over the past few weeks has been clamping down on gambling venues which he believes have “Vegas style slots” currently illegal in the state.  The casino owner of Victoryland has reported that without a court order or warrant he will not be able to raid them without warning.

Steve Wynn plans a casino for Philadelphia

Casino tycoon Steve Wynn is planning to build another casino, this time for Philadelphia entertainment and development partners in Pennsylvania.  Pennsylvania approved table games to go along side its slot machines, now Pennsylvania is turning more slots gambling revenue than Atlantic city, the perfect location for the new Wynn casino.  In the 1990’s Wynn fought a losing battle against the Pequots to build a connecticut casino, the Pequots won and opened Foxwoods.  15 years later Wynn is better positioned to make this casino a huge success.

Prison for casino gun attackers

A gang who plotted a hit on a businessman at an Edinburgh casino have now been jailed.  Tony Demarco, 63 was shot at outside of the Gala Maybury casino.  Imran Sakur, 35 plotted the assassination and Jamie Robertson pulled the trigger, both were jailed today for 11 years.  Craig Kelbie, 35 was given 11 years also alongside the driver Francis Mcglone 39 who got 10.  The assassination was over some unpaid debts owed by Mr Demarco, which he says don’t exist.

Michael Irvin accused of rape at Hard Rock casino

Hall of fame footballer Michael Irvin has been accused of rape at the Hard Rock hotel and casino, which doesn’t look great for Irvin someone who has already had problems with drugs and is now facing a serious charge.  The woman claims that Irvin supplied her with massive amounts of alcohol and then lured her to his hotel room.  Irvin not only denies the accusation but has filed a $100 million counter-suit.  Irvin has played his entire football career at the Cowboys and is considered one of the greatest receivers of all time.

Legal casino in Russia opened

The first legal casino in Russia has just been opened, the Oracle casino.  Gambling has been restricted to four regulated zones in Russia, the first casino has just been opened in Azov City, a Rostov region.  The new casinos has 200 slot machines and 10 table games.  The opening party saw 500 attendees but this casino may really struggle in getting players as its nearest city is 100km away.  The opening party was unfortunately saddened as one of the attendees died in a car crash leaving the casino, causing a rise in concerns over the difficulty to get to it leading to crashes.

Singapore’s first casino set to open

The new Singapore casino is set to open on Wednesday.  The new casino has been opened to ensure the country doesn’t rely solely on manufacturing but also takes revenue through other streams such as this casino.  The new casino cost $5b to make and will have 4 hotels with 1340 rooms.  One of the hotels of the casino will be a Hard Rock hotel.  A universal studios theme park is set to also open on the 49 hectare complex.  The new casino should create 35,000 jobs and the opening of casinos should push GDP for Singapore up by 1 percentage point.

Vegas finally on the rise

Vegas has been fighting the recession for the last 2 years, with large casino companies going bankrupt and others defaulting on loans and finding it impossible to get finance to carry on developments.  Finally Vegas has reported a month of increased revenue which looks promising.  According to the Gaming control board in November casinos took $873m making it a state wide increase of 4%.  The previous year things were looking terrible with no end in sight.  The Vegas strip has reported an increase of 7% in takings this month.
